Due to modern German law the swastika is prohibited to wear, so in 1957 Germany authorized that the swastika be replaced by an Iron Cross for the gold division, and the War Merit Cross with Swords for the silver division. This allowed WWII recipients to wear there awards in public with out any repercussions.
