Goetz medallion commemorating the sinking of the Lusitania. This is the most, infamous of the Goetz series of WWI medallions commemoraes the sinking of the civil liner ‘Lusitania’ in 1917 by a German U Boat. This example is actually a copy of one of the famous ‘Daily Mail’ ‘black propaganda’ replicas made on the instructions of Captain Reginald Hall, RN, Director of Naval Intelligence- and can be identified by the incorrect spelling of the date date ‘5. May 1915’ in the obverse exergue instead of '5. MAI 1915' Cast in grey metal with a blackened bronze finish.
