Due to German law prohibiting the swastika the WW2 version of this medal could not be worn by its recipients. In 1957 the Federal Republic of Germany authorised alternative 'de-nazified' replacement versions of World War II period war decorations. The swastika at the center of the War Merit Cross was replaced with the date 1939 standing for the year that it was originally introduced.
