The Order of the Red Eagle was awarded to both military personnel and civilians in recognition for valor in combat, excellence in military leadership, long and faithful service to the kingdom, or other achievements. As with most German orders, the Order of the Red Eagle could only be awarded to commissioned officers or civilians of approximately equivalent status.
By the time of WW1, the award had evolved into six classes. This is the 1st Class version - the second highest class. Typically awarded only to general officers, to high ranking noblemen and to the heads of foreign states
