These were worn during landings and airborne operations by assault troops and paratroops. They were worn on the upper arm to help avoid friendly fire. After the initial assault took place these were generally discarded by the troops. The flags were sewn to the upper right arm of the uniform. The edge has extra material to allow you to fold it over- but many troop simply tacked them on raw-edged.
