This shield was introduced on July 1, 1942. The award was bestowed for the period January 21, 1942 to May 5, 1942. It was to reward the defensive pocket that had been created at Cholm, a small town on the Lovat river in the Kalinin region of Russia. The defenders were comprised of assorted men from various units. Die-struck just like the originals and complete with a green wool backing.
